Over the weekend and today, NIST Gaithersburg employees have received emails about an explosion that occurred in Building 236. One employee was injured in that explosion, was taken to a trauma center for treatment, and subsequently released. The NIST Office of Safety, Health, and Environment has conducted a review of the laboratory where the incident occurred and found it to be free of hazardous conditions. The laboratory remains closed at this time, but Bldg. 236 is otherwise open for normal operations.
There have now been media reports alleging that the explosion was related to production of the illegal drug methamphetamine.
A spokesman from the Montgomery County Police Department was quoted in a newscast saying, “We’re still in the middle of this investigation. We are looking at the possibility that this was some sort of chemical reaction due to the manufacture of drugs.”
NIST is fully cooperating with Montgomery County Police in this investigation. We will continue to keep you informed as the investigation proceeds.
